Amar observed the work gangs hauling saplings out of the nearby creek bottom. They dumped their loads for the men making ladders. Another crew with harnessed horses was hauling a big log toward Upella to make a battering ram.
Upon the timber, stone, and dirt walls of the puny village, he could see people gazing out at the assembly of their destruction. Their palpable despair assured him of his superiority.
The morning was bright and pleasant after the stormy night. The sun soaking through his ruby armor soothed his body that was stiff after too much time in the saddle. His body craved a good long run, but he decided to save his energy for battle. He hoped to cross blades with a foe worthy of his attention.
His army sprawled around the village. Weary horses grazed the abundant grasses, and the enticing aroma of roasting beef tugged at the appetites of thousands. Livestock had been harvested quickly by his warriors and fat dripped into fires. Amar decided that he would let his followers eat well and rest after the siege equipment was prepared. His trapped enemies could fester in their fear while his men had lunch.
