The Musicians by the Italian master Caravaggio was painted around 1594 to 1595. The young men in this painting appear so real and alive. Because only two out of the four figures face the viewer, my curiosity is aroused to know what is going on in this intimate group. The two young men who face me definitely looked buzzed. I don’t know any other way to put it. Typical indolent musicians communing with their muses it would seem.
I also sense homoerotism in this composition. The young men are so close. The bare shoulder of the man in the foreground is smooth and inviting. The big bow tied in his sash at the back is marvelously enticing. The lutist who faces me with such irreverent stupor drapes his delicate hand across the strings with casual sensuality. This true work of art stimulates the mind and leaves me grateful to have peered inside this scene from hundreds of years ago.
